Blood on the prairie A Novel of the Sioux Uprising, Dakota Conflict, American Civil War

Who the dickens is this Toby Ryker I keep hearing about?

Here's what True West Magazine says about him.

"Toby Ryker, chief scout of the Sixth Minnesota, is a red-headed, half white-half Chippewa man. Living life to the brim, he would rather ride the prairies than plough them. But his Sioux neighbors, despairing a life of near starvation and broken treaties, rise up like a prairie whirlwind in September 1862. They mercilessly ravage the frontier, killing more than 1,000 settlers on Indian lands in the greatest storm of death rivaled only by the Civil War battles decimating the South. Ryker must remain loyal to the army, aid his Indian kinsman or just stand aside. When the outgunned Sioux surrender, Ryker is left with still one more bitter duty. Somehow he must find words to comfort the sorrowing wives of the 38 warriors who are condemned to hang." True West Magazine - May 2009.

Daktoa Conflict, Sioux Uprising, American Civil War, Largest Execution US History

Was Minnesota's Great Sioux Uprising of 1862 politically correct?

No, absolutely not, just as World War II, the Holocaust, and all the wars in history were not politically correct. But it did happen. The Sioux massacre resulted in the greatest loss of civilian life in an Indian war and the execution of 38 Sioux in Mankato by the Union Army. Both of these events were executions and both were the greatest of its kind in US history, and neither event was politically correct. But both happened 150 years ago. This is the sesquicentennial year.

Dakota Conflict, Sioux Uprising, American Civil War

"In a week, and mostly within forty-eight hours, 1,000 persons perished in excruciating pain, 2,000 more were maimed sufferers from the outrage, and 8,000, who before were comparatively well-to-do, were thrown, as paupers, on the charity of individuals, or on the bounty of the state. A stream of 30,000 fugitives rushed down the Minnesota valley, seeking protection in the interior towns of the state, or fleeing to the neighboring states, and even to their New England friends. Not less than $2,000,000 worth of property was destroyed in a belt of two hundred and fifty miles, and in ten counties, nothing was left."  – Autobiography of Henry H. Sibley

This is the most accurate account of the sheer magnitude of the destruction in Minnesota as a direct result of the great Sioux massacre of 1862. Henry Sibley was the appointed Commander of the Indian Expedition, having been  appointed by Governor Alexander Ramsey.

Hardcover  collector's edition, softcover edition, or ebook available right here at Amazon under the title "Blood on the Prairie - A Novel of the Sioux Uprising" by Steven M. Ulmen. 2012 is the sesquicentennial year.

Sioux Uprising, Dakota Conflict, American Civil War

The following quote from the biography of Henry H. Sibley, commander of the Indian Expedition in Minnesota in 1862, is offered as direct evidence of the number of dead and wounded in the Sioux Uprising. This quote points out the inaccuracy of the smaller death counts reported in historical accounts of the Sioux Uprising and puts in perspective the magnitude of this massacre, the largest massacre of civilians in an Indian war in US history.
