The military and townspeople and 4,000 visitors from all over America were coming to Mankato MN to prepare for and witness the hanging of 38 Sioux warriors involved in the Dakota Conflict. This hanging, ordered by President Lincoln, was and still remains the largest mass execution in the history of the United States.
