The Battle of Birch Coulee Rages on - James Cunningham

     James Cunningham, like so many of his comrades, enjoyed the feeling of immortality reserved for the young, and the only reason he signed up with the Sixth Minnesota Volunteers in the first place was for the sense of adventure the war offered. That adventure had worn thin two hours into the Battle of Birch Coulee as his buddies fell dead all around him, and now, realizing that death was upon him also, the adventure turned to terror. "Oh no," he cried between sobs. "Please, no! I'll do anything you say!"
     Cut Nose would have none of it. "You'll do nothing, dog." He raised his knife and plunged it deep into Cunningham's chest as the warriors screamed "Ki-yi-yi!" around him. Withdrawing the knife, the Indian then jabbed it into the soldier's abdomen and pulled it upwards in a ripping motion.
     Cunningham felt the sting of the knife enter his chest, but was surprised how little pain he felt. The second wound however, although not immediately lethal like the first, hurt like sin itself. The soldier threw his head back...
