1862 Timeline for Dakota Conflict, Sioux Uprising

The timeline is quiet for the next few weeks until the battle at Lone Tree Lake (misnamed the Battle of Wood Lake) is fought on September 23. That doesn't mean that Colonel Sibley, Toby Ryker, and the volunteers are twiddling their thumbs. They continue to scout the western Minnesota frontier, track the movement of Little Crow's warriors, order and await delivery of supplies and ammunition from Fort Snelling, assist with burials of the massacred settlers, and set up their field command post at Fort Ridgley. Today, September 8, 1862, Sibley pens this reply to the last correspondence from Little Crow. LITTLE CROW: You have murdered many of our people without any sufficient cause. Return me the prisoners, under a flag of truce, and I will talk to you like a man. I have sent your message to Governor Ramsey. H.H. Sibley, Colonel Commanding Military Expedition. (Note: Although General Pope has been appointed commander of the Northwest Territory and made responsible for the quashing of the Sioux Uprising, such action did not occur overnight in the times of 1862. Sibley is still the field commander and the defense of Minnesota from the Sioux is still his responsibility. This is still primarily an action of the Minnesota Militia under the direction of Governor Ramsey. Buy the exclusive Amazon Kindle story here. Amazon prime members worldwide read free.
