Timeline: Dakota Confict of 1862

December 4, 1862 - Several hundred civilians armed with hatchets, clubs, and knives, attack Camp Lincoln at Mankato where the condemned Dakota are being held. Martial law has been declared. Soldiers surround and disarm the rioters.

December 6, 1862 - President Lincoln issues the execution order for 39 of the 303 condemned Sioux to be executed. The hanging of one of the 39 is later suspended after new evidence casts doubt on his guilt. The execution date is set at December 26, the day after Christmas.
