Dakota Conflict Timeline - This Date in History October 23, 1862
The active fighting in the 5 week Indian war known as the Dakota Conflict is over.
General Henry Sibley has appointed a military commission to try summarily Sioux charged with war crimes. 303 will be sentenced to death by the halter. The military commission will continue trials until November 3, when winter weather will force Sibley's troops off the prairie to find shelter.
