Col. Henry Hastings Sibley Was The Man of the Hour
After Minnesota's Great Sioux Massacre of August 1862, during the American Civil War, Governor Alexander Ramsey appointed Henry Sibley to the rank of colonel and placed him in charge of the Indian Expedition. Sibley had never served in the military before this time. His assignment was to lead the Sixth Minnesota Regiment and volunteers into the field to halt the advance of Little Crow, the leader of the Sioux warriors who had waged the massacre. He proved to be an able leader and ended the Sioux uprising, also called the Dakota Conflict, within 6 weeks.
