Doctor Mayo Was Part of the Dakota Conflict of 1862

Dr. W.W. Mayo, then of LeSueur MN at the time of the Dakota Conflict of 1862 was on hand to witness the hanging of 38 Sioux Indians at a mass execution in Mankato, MN on December 26, 1862, the largest mass execution in U.S. history. Dr. W.W. Mayo was the father of Will and Charlie Mayo, the brothers who founded the now-famous Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. He ended up with the body of Cut Nose, one of the executed Indians, which he rendered down to bones. His sons learned basic anatomy by playing with this skeleton as children.
