Ancestor Mathias Ulmen has been found. Blood on the Prairie, Sioux Uprising, Dakota Conflict, American Civil War
Mathias Ulmen was my great, great, uncle, his brother Johannes being my great, great grandfather. Mathias was a businessman in Mankato in 1862 at the time of the great Sioux Uprising, or Dakota Conflict, and had a hotel within sight of the execution of the 38 Sioux warriors on December 26, 1862. Mathias Ulmen is featured in the book, "Blood on the Prairie - A Novel of the Sioux Uprising." We found the final resting place of Mathias, his wife, Elizabeth, and three other ancestors in Calvary Cemetery in Mankato this weekend. A picture of the tombstone is attached. What a marvelous find for the Ulmen clan! Can any of you read German? If so, let me know and I'll send through the epitaph from Mathias's tombstone.
