August 17th The Slaughter Begins

August 17th 1862 the Sioux massacre of Minnesota settlers began at Acton. Before it was over the casualty list was the highest for civilians in an Indian war in U.S. history. After it was over 38 Sioux warriors were hung on a large gallows at Mankato, the largest mass execution in U.S. history. We commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Dakota Conflict, honor all victims of the war, forgive our ancestors for their crimes, and support the reconciliation between the Dakota and white cultures.
